About this rug
Hand-knotted in Herat City, Afghanistan in the 1970s, this rug is woven in a traditional Turkmen gul design — rows of octagonal medallions in ivory and deep brown march across a saturated red field, each gul centered on a small rosette and separated by latch-hook diamond accents. It's the classic repeating-medallion structure long associated with Turkmen weaving, sometimes sold generically as 'Bukhara' in the trade, though the drawing here is finer and more compact than the large elephant-foot guls of a true Bukhara.
Hand-knotted in wool with excellent pile density for its age, the deep red, beige-ivory, dark brown and black palette stays bold and legible edge to edge. At 6'6" x 9'7", it's a substantial, one-of-a-kind collector's piece suited to a living room or bedroom.
