Down the centre of this vintage hand-knotted rug runs a column of interlocking, latch-hooked medallions in deep madder red, indigo and ivory. The surrounding field is busy with small geometric fillers - stars, hooks and stylised blossoms - in the lively village manner of a Persian-style Hamadan medallion design. Multiple guard borders, one carrying a running vine of angular flower heads, contain the composition and keep the eye moving inward. The soft wool pile has broken in beautifully, its reds glowing warm against cooler blue-black accents.
