A richly worked curvilinear design distinguishes this 6'4" x 9'7" vintage Afghan rug, hand-knotted in wool in a Persian-style Kashan manner. A madder-red field is covered in a dense tracery of arabesque vines, palmettes and blossoms, gathered around a soft ivory-and-sage central medallion with matching corner spandrels. Fine detailing and a muted, slightly faded palette of terracotta, moss and cream give it an old-world, formal air quite different from the region's geometric tribal weaves. The flowing floral drawing reads elegant and calm, at home in a living room, dining room, or bedroom where a classic look is wanted.
