About this rug
Hand-knotted in Andkhoy village, Afghanistan in the 1970s, this rug is drawn in a Persian-style Sultanabad design rather than a Kazak geometric — a deep navy field carries an elegant, symmetrical allover pattern of curling vines, palmettes and blossoms in ivory, rust and sage, the fine curvilinear scrollwork characteristic of Sultanabad and Mahal weaving. A red border echoes the same floral vine and palmette motifs, unifying the piece.
Hand-knotted in wool, the rug holds its detail and color well for its age. At 6'7" x 9'1", the dark ground and dense, refined pattern make it a strong anchor for a living or dining room.
