About this rug
Handwoven in Herat City, Afghanistan in the 1980s, this Sumak flatweave carries a bold Caucasian-style medallion design — two large hooked and stepped diamond medallions in black stack down a soft terracotta-red field, each centered on a pink-toned rosette, with olive-green and beige accent motifs scattered between. An ivory border set with small octagon rosettes frames the piece, giving it the layered, structured finish typical of fine Sumak weaving.
Handwoven entirely in wool using the sumak flat-stitch technique, the rug shows soft beige, terracotta, black, olive and faded pink in a harmonious, rustic-elegant palette. In good vintage condition, at 7'2" x 9'2" it anchors a living room, dining area, or bedroom with real character.
