This handwoven Afghan Mushwani kilim covers the whole field with a fine diamond lattice, each small diamond filled with its own hooked or star motif and picked out in slate blue, rust brown, sage green and cream against a soft rose-red ground. The color is the character here: gently faded and low-contrast, so it reads calm and lived-in rather than loud, which makes it far easier to place than a bright tribal piece. Braided-cable and diamond bands frame the field, finished with natural fringe. Woven by Afghan women in the north, with small shifts in pattern and color as natural marks of the craft.

This is a mixed-technique flatweave with raised soumak wrapping, so the diamonds stand slightly proud of the surface and you can feel the texture with your hand. The wool is handspun and the weave is flat, which means it's thinner and lighter than a knotted pile rug — easy to move and shake out, and it sits well under furniture or layered over a larger rug or natural floor.
