About this rug

This is an Ensi, the traditional Turkmen door rug — the piece that hung across the entrance of a yurt. It is laid out in the classic hatchli, or cross, design: the field divided into four panels by a central cross, each quadrant filled with rows of candelabra and tree motifs, and finished at the ends with the comb-like elem panel that marks a true Ensi. It is worked in deep madder red, aubergine and brown with ivory and soft rose accents, framed by several gul and hooked-motif borders. Most sellers list this design simply as a Bukhara; naming it properly matters, because the Ensi is one of the most collected forms in Turkmen weaving.

The wool is hand-spun, hand-knotted on a wool foundation. Please read the condition honestly: this is a genuine older piece and the colors have mellowed and faded with age, most noticeably through the center and lower field, with even low pile throughout. It is structurally sound and lies flat. That softened, muted palette is exactly what collectors and boho decorators look for in an old Turkmen — but it is age, not newness. Best suited to lower-traffic rooms, layering, or hanging on a wall as it was originally made to do. Colors may look slightly different depending on your screen and room light.
