Rows of flowering shrubs — densely drawn in navy, red, gold and green — cover the ivory field of this 4'8" x 6' antique Afghan rug, a Persian-style Bakhtiari shrub design executed entirely by hand in wool. Each plant form is slightly different from its neighbor, the sure sign of a weaver working from memory rather than a printed pattern. A navy border of large rosettes and serrated leaves contains the field, with narrow ivory guards on either side.
