About this rug
This hand-knotted Afghan Maldari rug sets fourteen large octagonal guls, the classic elephant-foot motif, in two columns down a saturated crimson field, each one drawn in black with a hooked cross at its center. Aubergine and mocha borders with small diamond motifs frame the field, closing into natural fringe. This is a bold, primitive tribal weaving rather than a fine detailed one — the wool is coarse hand-spun, the pile is thick and slightly shaggy, and the red shifts and pools across the field (abrash) the way naturally dyed wool does. That character is the appeal; collectors of rustic and nomadic weaving look for exactly this.
At 5'6" by 11'3" it is a long gallery size, which makes it useful where a standard rectangle will not fit: down a long living room, a wide hallway, an open-plan run, or along the foot of a bed. The thick pile feels substantial underfoot and wears extremely well. It lies flat, takes a rug pad well on hard floors, and only improves with age. Colors may look slightly different depending on your screen and room light.
