About this rug

Hand-knotted in 1930s Afghanistan, this antique 4'9" x 6'3" wool rug is worked in a Persian-style Qashqai design. Against a deep navy field sits a concentric diamond medallion anchored by ivory hooks, while the surrounding ground teems with paisley botehs, tiny blossoms, and scattered bird and animal figures — the joyful, crowded vocabulary of nomadic weaving. Ivory guard stripes and a motif-filled border complete the frame. Age has burnished the wool to a soft sheen and mellowed the reds and blues into warm, harmonious tones. Compact and full of character, it makes a wonderful study, entry, or bedside piece for collectors of tribal weaving. A rare, one-of-a-kind survivor, with only a single example available.
