About this rug
This hand-knotted Turkmen rug carries a tight Beljik gul lattice across a warm madder-red field, filled in with black, ivory and small sparks of rust. The field is wrapped in several stepped borders and fine ivory zigzag guard stripes, closing into a flat kilim-striped end and natural ivory fringe. Up close the small repeating motifs read dense and jewel-like; from across a room the deep red anchors the space and warms it. Because it is woven by hand, minor shifts in the pattern and color are natural marks of the craft.
The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, worked in the durable Afghan double-knot. It sits full and even, so it wears well, cleans easily, and suits entryways, bedrooms, living rooms, offices, or a layered spot over a larger rug. It lies flat, holds a rug pad on hard floors, and only mellows with use. Screen and lighting can shift how the reds and navies read.
