A truly outstanding vintage Afghan kilim of large format and exceptional weave quality — a piece that stands in a class of its own for the extraordinary fineness and density of its flatweave construction. The composition centers on a magnificent large elongated diamond medallion in ivory and crimson red, built from layer upon layer of intricate stepped geometric forms, its pointed tips extending dramatically toward both ends of the rug and its interior filled with a fine trellis lattice pattern in crimson and ivory that glows luminously against the deep surrounding field.
The field itself is divided into two contrasting halves — the upper portion carries a deep burgundy red ground densely filled with a fine all-over diamond lattice pattern in ivory and teal, while the lower half shifts to a rich midnight navy ground packed with an equally fine all-over repeating floral and boteh pattern in pink, lavender, ivory, and teal. The contrast between the two field halves is bold and dramatic, making the central ivory medallion appear to float between two completely different worlds — a highly sophisticated compositional device that speaks to the exceptional skill of the weaver.
The border is layered and beautifully detailed — a wide crimson red outer frame carries a continuous scrolling vine and floral motif in teal, pink, ivory, and navy, refined and flowing. A pale steel blue inner border carries a dense repeating small triangle and trefoil motif in crimson and ivory, and a further wide crimson band at the very bottom end carries a row of large stylized animal and floral forms in navy, teal, and ivory — a rare and charming pictorial detail. Natural ivory fringe at both short ends.
