A rare and highly collectible vintage Afghan multi-niche prayer rug — a format that is significantly more uncommon and sought after than the standard single mihrab prayer rug. The field is divided into six individual prayer niche panels arranged in three rows of two, each one depicting a fully formed mihrab arch in forest green, burnt orange, and burgundy, set on a warm ivory ground and surrounded by decorative striped column forms, ornamental vase and urn motifs above each arch, and small diamond and cross fills throughout.
Each niche is slightly different in its color arrangement and detail, giving the composition a lively, handcrafted individuality while maintaining the overall symmetry of the multi-prayer format. This type of rug was traditionally woven for communal prayer, allowing multiple worshippers to pray side by side on a single rug — a deeply meaningful origin that adds significant spiritual and cultural value to the piece. A narrow dark dividing strip runs vertically down the center separating the two columns of niches cleanly.
