What Size Rug Do I Need? A Simple Room-by-Room Guide

The single most common rug mistake is buying too small. A rug that "floats" in the middle of a room makes the whole space feel disconnected. Here are the simple rules interior designers actually use.

Living room

Choose a rug big enough that at least the front legs of all your seating rest on it. For most living rooms that means a 6x9 ft or 7x10 ft rug; large open-plan rooms often need 8x10 or bigger. Leave 10–20 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls to frame the room.

Bedroom

Two approaches work. One large rug (7x10 or 8x10) under the bed, extending 18–24 inches on each side so your feet land on wool every morning. Or — a favorite trick with one-of-a-kind rugs — a pair of smaller rugs (around 3x5) on each side of the bed.

Dining room

The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. Measure your table and add four feet to both dimensions.

Hallway and kitchen

This is runner territory. Leave 3–5 inches of floor visible on each side. Standard runners are 2 to 3 feet wide and anywhere from 6 to 16 feet long — vintage tribal runners often come in wonderfully unusual lengths, which is part of their charm.

Entryway

A small rug (2x3 to 4x6) sets the tone for the whole house. Choose something tough and characterful — small tribal rugs and Baluch pieces are perfect here.

One-of-a-kind sizes are part of the beauty

Handwoven rugs are rarely exact standard sizes — a "7x10" might be 6'8" x 9'10". We list the true measured size on every product page. If you're unsure whether a specific rug fits your space, message us on WhatsApp with your room dimensions and we'll tell you honestly.
